Incense meditation – a far-reaching experience

Published 11.10.2023

"Sensing your body mindfully, detaching yourself from your thoughts, perceiving smells in a conscious way and becoming one with nature" – this is how our herbalist Brigitta describes the experience of incense meditation.

What actually is an incense meditation?

The incense meditation combines the traditional relaxation meditation with incense which is crafted from all-natural ingredients such as roots, barks, needles, fruits and much more. Brigitta gathers these elements herself in the local forests, dries them and prepares them for the meditation sessions. "Everything provided by nature can be used for meditation. Nature grounds us, empowers and energises us and strengthens our immune system," explains the herbalist as a nature loving person who draws energy from the meadows and forests.

In the course of a session, each participant individually chooses three to four of the incense materials from Brigitta’s selection. Each person intuitively chooses the elements they need in that very moment. To complete the aroma experience, Brigitta adds the matching ingredients to this selection and the session is ready to begin.

The meditation

The meditation begins: While sitting on a chair, with the feet on an incense meditation bench, the focus is placed on conscious breathing. The incense bowl is placed under the bench. The ascending heat allows the skin pores to open and the plant material to penetrate into the skin. In this case, the feet in particular are pampered by the warmth. "People mostly forget about their feet, even though they are carrying us through life. This is why our meditation has a very special focus on them", says Brigitta. During the session, the participants will sense awareness of their body and its individual parts. Attention and mindfulness are entirely focused on the body, so that the thoughts of everyday life no longer matter for that moment.

Moreover, the sense of smell – a sense that cannot be controlled and which directly evokes feelings and memories – is stimulated by the different fragrances. "The sense of smell frees itself: experiences, memories, joy, a sense of comfort as well as the emotional level are directly related to it", says the herbalist.

Finally, the experience is rounded off with a natural beverage created by Brigitta in accordance with the respective season. At this point, the participants reflect on the session together with our expert before leaving the meditation room well grounded and ready for new family experiences at the Feuerstein.

Brigitta shares with us her favourite incenses for the cold season

Calendula: The calendula brings the sun right into our hearts. Especially during the cold season, it donates light and warmth as well as a sense of protection and comfort.

Juniper berry: The juniper berry is a protective plant. In winter, it helps us to protect ourselves from spirits. Its cleansing and purifying effect lends a helping hand in distancing oneself from problems.

Rose blossom: The rose blossom has a soothing and relaxing effect. It harmonises body and mind. The plant can be especially used for relaxation during an aromatic evening incense.
