Living Montessori at the Feuerstein – An Interview with Saskia Wedel

Saskia picks up a toy and shows it to a toddler.

Montessori education is based on a clear philosophy: children learn through their own abilities when they are given space, time and trust. Instead of instruction and rigid guidance, observation, mindfulness and a carefully prepared environment take centre stage. This philosophy is lived every day at the Feuerstein – embedded in the mountain landscape, with plenty of room for independent discovery and learning.

A special element of this approach are the Montessori Intensive Weeks, which will take place at the Feuerstein for the third time in 2026. They are accompanied by educator Saskia Wedel, who supports and guides families intensively throughout this special period.

A Look Behind the Scenes: A Conversation with Saskia Wedel

What does Montessori mean to you personally?
“Montessori is not a method for me, but an attitude,” explains Saskia Wedel. Taking children seriously as independent individuals and trusting in their abilities is at the heart of her work. The guiding principle “Help me to do it myself” accompanies her every day – not as a rule, but as an inner conviction.

How do children experience their daily life in a Montessori environment?
A Montessori day is calm, clearly structured and at the same time free. Children choose activities that follow their own interests – from sorting natural materials to focused work with Montessori materials. A prepared environment and adults who observe rather than intervene encourage concentration, independence and genuine self-confidence.

What role do parents play in Montessori education?
Parents are active partners in the developmental process. Saskia Wedel encourages them to consciously observe their child without judging or directing. It is not about “doing nothing”, but about mindful guidance. Even in conflict situations, children are supported in recognising their feelings, finding words and taking responsibility.

What makes the Montessori Intensive Weeks at the Feuerstein so special?
Embedded in the tranquillity of the mountains, a decelerated space is created in which families can experience Montessori in harmony with nature. Many parents report that they see their child with new eyes during this time – with more trust and less haste. Children enjoy following their own rhythm, exploring, creating and discovering something new.
