Interview with Peter Mader – The Most Important Steps of the Past Years

Feuerstein Nature Family Resort with host Peter Mader

Despite all criticism, Peter Mader has always believed in the Feuerstein as it stands today

25 years of Feuerstein – a quarter of a century full of change, courage and vision. Behind this success story is host and owner Peter Mader, who has gradually transformed the Feuerstein Nature Family Resort into what it is today: a unique retreat for families in the heart of the South Tyrolean Alps. In this interview, he provides insights into the most important stages of this journey, talks about doubts and successes, and reveals what drove him to consistently implement his vision.

Why did you choose to acquire the Feuerstein and enter the hospitality industry without prior experience?

Peter: It was a stroke of luck that led me into the hotel business. I was working in real estate when the opportunity arose to acquire the Feuerstein and another hotel. I sold the latter straight away, but there was no prospective buyer for the Feuerstein. So, together with my partners, I decided to turn the former youth hostel into a 3-star hotel, which was a viable option back then. We kept improving the property by adding rooms, a swimming pool and, eventually, chalets, raising it to 4-star standard.

When did you first envision the Feuerstein as it is today?

Peter: The idea took shape in 2016, when we started building the play barn, fitness room and suites. We intensively considered whether to preserve the existing structure or demolish and rebuild it entirely. We opted for the latter and reimagined it in an innovative way that harmoniously blended with the surrounding landscape. We placed great emphasis on sustainability, especially in recycling and reusing the demolished material to ensure an environmentally conscious approach.

How did you handle criticism, especially during the major renovations in 2017, when many people likely thought you were taking a huge risk?

Peter: It was definitely a challenging period filled with doubts. A lot of people thought I was crazy for pursuing this vision, but despite the huge financial risks, I was driven by a strong belief in something greater, which gave me the strength to stay the course. Today, I am extremely grateful that I trusted my intuition and pushed past the criticism. The Feuerstein as I once dreamed it has become reality.

Were you ever tempted to give up the Feuerstein and return to on your original business, particularly during challenging times?

Peter: That has never been an option for me. Once I made the investment, the Feuerstein became a true passion project. The idea of creating something unique for my family and the generations to come motivated me. My children and family were the driving force and inspiration behind my perseverance, even in difficult times.

What does the future hold for the Feuerstein?

Peter: We have a clear and forward-thinking vision for the Feuerstein. We aim to deepen our bond with nature and stay true to our sustainable values. Our goal is to become Europe's best family resort and to create a haven of relaxation that benefits both our guests and the environment.
